Establishment of a centralized PMO supports efficient and repeatable project delivery

The Challenge

A $1 billion technology solutions provider lacked a corporate-wide business Project Management Office (PMO), resulting in costly delivery inefficiencies and poor resource allocations across the organization. There was an absence of best practice processes, project management tools, templates, and documents for their day-to-day project management activities. In addition, they had no repeatable and predictable project success, and no mechanism to track resource allocation and utilization across PM resources.

The Solution

We partnered with our client to assess the current state of PM across the organization, allowing for comparison to best practices and gap identification. We created a PMO Center of Excellence to centralize a standard PM methodology, best practices, and reporting templates, and documented processes to ensure alignment across PM teams. In addition, we helped our client select a PPM tool to support the new processes, and facilitated consistent KPI and BI reporting and resource management.

The Results

  • Created a centralized Project Management Office.
  • Developed governance policies, auditing procedures, and compliance measures to support adherence to best practices.
  • Standardized processes and methodologies across the project management team.
  • Implemented a PPM tool for project portfolio intelligence, KPI reporting, resource allocation and utilization capabilities.
  • Developed a repeatable, consistent approach to client project delivery.
  • Provided PMO organizational structure for effective project management.

Strategies to Help Bridge the Strategy-Execution Gap

It is a challenge as old as companies have been in existence: too many priorities and not enough time or people to execute them. And now, more than any time in history, companies either thrive and evolve or quickly fall behind.
